We use our browsers for a lot of things: school, work, shopping, and more. When using a browser for work or school, it is easy to waste a lot of time visiting websites that you should not be when you should be working or studying. There is also a need for parents to stop their children from visiting harmful websites. A good way to ensure this does not happen is to block these websites. But how do you go about blocking websites on your browser?

How to Block Websites on Any Browser, Blocking Websites on Chrome and Chromium-Based Browsers – Adding an Extension

Installing a web blocker remains one of the best ways of blocking websites on different browsers. Many of the browsers we use today are based on Chromium, which is the open-source project Chrome is based on. So, if an extension works in Chrome, it will work on all chrome-based browsers that can access the Chrome Store.

To block websites in all these browsers, the first step is visiting the Chrome store and searching for “Block Site”. Next, you need to click “Add to Chrome” in the top-right hand corner to add this website blocker to your browser.

A popup will open that will give you a list of all of the extension’s features. All you need to do is click on “Add Extension” at the bottom and wait for the extension to download and install. Once it does, an orange shield with a circle with a line through it will appear on the extension bar.  This tells you the installation has completed.

Blocking Websites

Blocking a website using this extension is fairly easy. All you have to do is visit the website, click on the extension’s icon and then “Block this Site”. You will not be able to visit the website unless you unblock it.

To do this, all you have to do is click on the shield icon, and click “Edit Block Sites List”. A  window will open and you will see a minus sign next to each blocked website. Simply click on it to unblock a website.

For Firefox and Opera

Although you cannot install extensions from the Chrome Store using Firefox, you can use Firefox’s Add-Ons manager to do so. All you need to do is click on Tools on the menu and select Add-Ons. On the page that opens, you will see a search box. Type “BlockSite” and then click enter.

Once the BlockSite add-on page opens, click “Add to Firefox”. On the popup that opens, click “Add”, then “Okay, got it” on the second popup and wait for the icon to appear on Firefox’s toolbar. Once this is done, click on the icon, and click “Agree” to give BlockSite permissions to block websites.

Now you can block websites and remove them from the block list as you would on Chromium-based browsers.

As for Opera, you will need to visit the Opera add-ons website and search for “Install Chrome Extensions”. Once the extension is installed, you can visit the Chrome Store and install BlockSite like you would on any Chromium-based Browser.

Blocking Websites on Android

To block websites on your Android phone, you can use the BlockSite app. You can install the app easily from the Google Play Store. Just search for “BlockSite” on your Google Play Store app. Once the website is downloaded, its icon will appear on your app drawer or homepage.

Click on the icon to open the app. When you open the app for the first time, you will be asked to consent to some permissions. These permissions will allow the app to block websites on your phone. In most cases, you will need to “Enable” or “Use Service” to start using the app.

To block a website, open the app and click on the green plus (+) icon at the bottom of your screen. This opens a page that lets you block the websites you would like to block.  Here, you can also tap on the tabs to go to the app section where you can block apps.

Block a website or app by entering the full URL of the website or the name of the app. A site or app is considered blocked once you click in the checkmark at the top-right hand corner of your screen.

On the screen that opens, you will see the websites you have blocked and this is where you can add more apps and websites, or remove the ones you have blocked from the list.

Blocking Websites on iOS

Blocking websites on iOS works similarly to Android with the only difference being that you use the Apple Store instead of the Google Play Store. It is also important to note that the BlockSite icon on the App Store is a green rounded square with a white shield in the center. The shield has an orange circle with a line through it.

Conclusion

Blocking a website on your computer or phone is very easy because there are apps that will help you do just that. Also, you can block apps on your phone so you can stay focused whether you are at work or need to study.
