Virgin Media now offering Gigabit broadband to almost 1.4 million homes on the island of Ireland

Virgin Media has switched on gigabit broadband across its entire network in Northern Ireland. Nearly 400,000 homes are now able to benefit from Northern Ireland’s fastest broadband offering average download speeds of 1,104Mbps. This includes homes in Belfast, Ballymena, Carrickfergus, Craigavon, Derry, Lisburn, Newtownabbey, Portadown and other towns. Virgin Media has invested £150 million in Northern Ireland over the last five years as part of its network expansion programme.

This extensive launch follows on from Virgin Media Ireland’s recent launch of their gigabit broadband service in August making Virgin Media the country’s largest gigabit broadband provider.

Tony Hanway, CEO of Virgin Media Ireland, said: “As the COVID-19 pandemic has altered the way we all work and live, our fibre-rich networks and gigabit broadband service continue to deliver seamless connectivity that has never been more crucial. This announcement for Virgin Media in Northern Ireland reinforces our efforts as a company to be able to offer customers the very best speeds possible and the latest in-home technology to unlock the power of this new capability.”

The power of gigabit broadband

With Virgin Media’s hyperfast gigabit speeds, ultra-high-definition 4K films and TV programmes, very large files and videos can be downloaded almost instantaneously, even with multiple devices using the connection simultaneously.
